The Foundation is run 100% by volunteers so all proceeds go directly to families for scholarships and programs! It is their goal to raise more money this year so they can support the growing number of scholarship requests and implement some additional programs such as Lose The Training Wheels and iCan Work program.

I have a dream that abortions based upon a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome will cease not because they have become illegal but because mothers and fathers feel empowered and encouraged to choose life, because doctors and genetic counselors see the great potential of individuals with Down syndrome and communicate those possibilities to frightened family members.

Throwback Video Game Art Show

I am one of the artists contributing to the Throwback Video Game Art Show at the Belle Isle Yacht Pub in Orlando FL.

The show opens this weekend. My submission is based off of a piece I did for a collaborative pinup book I published with Mike "Locoduck" Duron.

For the art show, I wanted to revisit this theme, but instead of traditional line and digital color, I wanted to make the artwork larger and more dimensional. I used foamcore and acrylic paint and cut the shapes to create layers. The final piece is roughly 24" X 36".

I liked working with the foamcore and cut paper. I learned a lot with this piece and I think you'll see more stuff like this from me in the future.

That's it. 2011 is over. If you've been following this blog for a while, you know what a bad 2010 I had. In contrast however, 2011 was a phenomenal year full of growth and opportunities. I went back and looked at my daily posts of the year and found that I had accomplished far more than I intended and experienced things I had never dreamed possible. Here's my 2011 year in review:

I started the year off with a broken computer. But thanks to my good friend Chris Brown who repaired it, it's still working today. The Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl. I updated Durkin's Dragons: Parodies and Tributes and created a whole new book, SCRAPS, both of which I sold at Megacon. I started the Blog Buttons you see on the right and participated in Toon Challenge over on Facebook. I lost my wallet and got it back two weeks later. I attended Star Wars Weekends several times and rode the new Star Tours over and over. I participated in the Threadless Muppet T-Shirt Design Challenge. I debuted Geeky Friday on the blog. I also began Muppet Monday. I started my new comic Durkin Droppings. I wrote and illustrated my story Dead Charlie and Zombie Bob for Dark Mischief. My aunt Theresa passed away. I went to Wisconsin to attend the Kenosha Festival of Cartooning. I turned forty. Three of my art pieces were displayed in my first art gallery show. I went to the screening of The Muppet Movie at the Orlando Puppet Festival and had the honor of meeting Heather Henson, one of the highlights of my year. I entered a design into the Mighty Fine Muppet t-shirt contest where I placed and had my design printed. I briefly attended the ISCA convention. The Muppets triumphantly returned to the big screen. I drew a LOT, created a LOT and had one of the most productive and artistic years of my life.

So I ended the year on a high note, but my journey is only beginning. There are already major plans in the works for 2012.

For starters, I am finishing up a piece for the Throwback Video Game Art Show in January and will have a piece for the Pee-Wee Herman Art Show in February. Also in February, I will be going to New York to draw at the Fierce Fun Toys booth at Toy Fair! It will be my first time to New York and I'm super excited!

That's about all I can tell you about right now, but when I'm able to share more, you'll be able to see it right here on this blog.

And speaking of the blog...

For over two years I have posted EVERY SINGLE DAY. It's been very fulfilling for me and has proven that if I commit to something and set my mind to it, I can do anything. But the popularity of blogs is declining and the new focus is on online networking sites like Facebook. I've been increasing my presence on Facebook for the last few months and I really enjoy the instant feedback and wide-ranging audience of friends, family and fans. It's an easier interface for people and makes me more accessible. My focus going forward is to continue posting more on Facebook, Twitter and other sites.

That means that I will no longer be posting on this blog every single day. I will be posting as much as I can, and when times are busy it may in fact be every single day. So if you're on Facebook or Twitter and haven't linked up with me, you can click the links to the right and get up to the minute info from me that you may not get instantly right here.

Thanks to every one of you for a fantastic year. I look forward to 2012. It's going to be amazing!

I rarely get sick. I have to thank my wife for that. A healthy diet and ample rest has kept me like Bruce Willis in Unbreakable. But this morning I woke up at 5:30 dizzy and vomiting. I've been in bed ever since, and on my day off too. I've managed to keep down a slice of plain toast and some tea, but if I move even slightly, the room starts spinning. Not sure why, perhaps some crazy flu bug. So all I have to post for today is a pic I did last night for a guest of their two dogs.

I'm going back to sleep.

A Life of Science: Mad Scientist

I took a few short videos on my iPhone today of Jett climbing stairs. I apologize for the black and white video, the app on my phone had the color toggled off and the magic was happening so fast that I couldn't adjust it in time.

It's the first time Jett has voluntarily approached and climbed stairs on his own. We've practiced before on hand-made stairs fashioned from couch cushions as we don't have stairs in our house. He saw these stairs while we were miniature golfing and he conquered them with fierce enthusiasm!

This is neat. I made a word cloud from the Durkinworks blog. A word cloud gives greater visual prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text.

In this case, you can see the words I've used most frequently on this blog are largest in the cloud. This particular cloud suggests that the sampling of text was taken from the more recent posts, probably from the past few months or so.

Artist Spotlight: Johanna Veerenhuis

I have to say, I was quite flattered when I saw a recent Facebook post by fellow artist Johanna Veerenhuis. She said,

"I was inspired by Kenny Durkin and his dragon drawings. I realized dragons would give me creative freedom which is a delight in between the sculpting where you have to capture likeness etc. So there'll be more to come!"

Johanna posted a few pics of her latest sculpt, a cheeky she-dragon named Miss Letoe.

Inspiring Johanna is such an honor for me, and her work has inspired me as well. I know Johanna from the International Society of Caricature artists. Among her talents is 3-D caricature sculpting. You can see some more of her work here. Thanks Johanna!

Geeky Friday is back after a hiatus. There's just so much going on that I can't feature a Geeky Friday every week, so I'll just post it when I have an "open" Friday.

One of the previous Geeky Fridays featured my Nightmare Before Christmas figure collection. Normally housed in my Nightmare Before Christmas themed bathroom, it's currently in the "showcase" above my television in my living room. The showcase is a ever-rotating display of a part of my collection. Previously it was Futurama, but now due to the holidays I changed it to something more festive. For Halloween, it looked like this:

Oops the mouse: On sale now!

One of my favorite clients that I work for is Fierce Fun Toys. I've illustrated children's books and designed several toys for them, and I'll be working with them even more in 2012.

The large plush animals all have a unique feature. When you squeeze them, they make a funny bodily noise. Norman the Elephant (Phartephant) farts when you squeeze his tail. Harry the Koala hiccups, Ben the Hippo sneezes.

The latest character is Oops the Christmas mouse. It seems when Oops eats too much candy, he burps when you squeeze his tummy.

Oops is a 4 inch super soft plush with a key chain loop so he can travel with you.

I got to design Oops per the client's instructions.

The Muppets: A review.

Yesterday I saw the new film The Muppets.

I'll spare you the plot points and synopsis of the movie, that info is everywhere. I also won't go into what a huge Henson/Muppet fan I am and what an influence they are to me. If you want to know, just click the Muppets tab on the right-hand column.

What I will discuss is the film, and I'll try not to give any spoilers away. I think writing for the Muppets is an incredible challenge. It comes down to the tone. The Muppets are sweet and nostalgic, yet chaotic and sometimes edgy. They are quiet and reflective, yet have explosive anarchy. There's so much warmth, heart and humor. A fine line needs to be walked. The Muppets are FAMILY entertainment, they are not meant strictly for children, nor are they geared only toward adults.

It's obvious to me, for one of the few times in 20 years, that the Muppets are in capable hands. The movie is a delight. I sat there with a smile on my face nearly the entire time. I even have a few goosebump moments and an occasional tear (dusty theater I'm sure).

This movie was a love letter to the fans. There were so many references and inside jokes and fun little details packed into the corners and backgrounds of nearly every scene. What surprised me, were the numerous call-outs to Jim Henson himself. In several flashback scenes, they even used his voice and performance.

I was also pleased that CGI was used as little as possible. The movie celebrated the art of puppetry, as well it should. There were even a few "how-did-they-do-that, moments, a hallmark of any good Muppet movie.

Was the movie perfect? Well, no. The film was trying to accomplish so much in such a short running time resulting in some confusing, chaotic editing. Judging by the footage from the trailers and clues in the soundtrack, there's a wealth of footage on the cutting room floor. I would love to see a director's cut, or the deleted scenes when the movie comes to DVD/Blu Ray.

Regardless of its flaws, the Muppets are back and not a moment too soon. We live in a cynical and sarcastic time. The Muppets remind us that it's okay to be silly, sweet and goofy. We need their trademark gee-whiz optimism in our lives.

I'm not sure that this review gave the movie justice. I have more that I'd like to say, but I want to give you a few days to actually see it for yourselves before I go into more detail, so look for some additional thoughts of the movie coming soon.

I should mention, give yourself extra time to get to the movie before it starts because there's a new Toy Story short before the movie, and it's terrific.

I LOVED the movie! My intention was to post a review today, but after seeing the movie, a botched attempt at putting up Christmas decorations, and having to take the kids to their mom's, I'm out of time and off to work!

Well, this is it. The last Muppet Monday before The Muppets hits theaters. I'm going to be seeing it Wednesday, and I'll give a spoiler-free review after seeing the movie. You have a week from today to see the film before I do the spoiler-rich version of the review, so plan your holiday weekend accordingly!

I couldn't decide what else to post today. There's just so much new stuff to choose from.
The Muppets have officially dominated the media. They've made the recent covers of magazines like Entertainment Weekly and Wired, there are articles in the New York Times and newspapers around the world, they're making the television and talk show rounds (including an appearance on Saturday Night Live) and their soundtrack just became available. This is a great time to be a Muppet fan!

I had to leave St. Pete for a few hours early this morning because I had an appointment in Orlando. My plan was to drive back to St. Pete to bask in the greatness that is the ISCA convention. However, as I approached my destination in Orlando, this appeared...

...my check engine light came on.

Ugh. So after I finished my errand, I drive home to Clermont and took the car to my mechanic. Turns out several hours and a hundred bucks later it was determined that the problem was a sensor issue.

I'm so frustrated. But there WILL be another con next year, and I WILL be there!

...but I'm not driving.

ISCA Convention: Lodgings

I'm at St. Pete's Beach attending the International Society of Caricature Artists Convention for a few days. I was unable to get a room at the hotel that the convention is at, but I did get a room up the road at this place:

The hotel deftly walks the fine line between scary and charming.

Due to a mixup, I was booked in a double and after explaining that I was alone, they switched me to a single, but threw in a kitchen.

I find mom and pop places like this to be quite endearing.

I considered my kitchen and I got to thinking, if I get some groceries, I could prepare meals out of my room and not spend tons of money going out to eat.

After picking up a few supplies at the local Publix, I couldn't wait to get back to the room and pop my Home Run Inn frozen pizza in the oven.

...But hotel kitchens don't have ovens.

So I improvised.

Not bad...

2011 ISCA Convention FAIL

Well, after a considerable amount of debate, number crunching and schedule reshuffling, I've determined without question that I will not be able to attend the 2011 International Society of Caricature Artists Convention here in Florida this week.

This decision was not made lightly and comes with a significant amount of regret. I was looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. I desperately need the caricature "booster shot" that an ISCA convention always provides. I had many seminars I planned on attending. I had a studio piece (nearly) ready to unveil. I had competitions that I wanted to participate in. But most of all, I wanted to support my brother and dear friend, Steve Hearn in his role of ISCA President.

There is good news. The ISCA has offered the option of a "day pass" for those who are only able to attend for a portion of the convention. My plan is to attend Tuesday and Wednesday (and possibly Friday). I think this is the most realistic scenario for me. Can't wait!

Hit and run

There are many types and styles of live caricature. One that I've tried recently is the "hit and run" caricature. In this case, instead of being front and center drawing at an easel and putting on a show, the artist is to remain as invisible as possible, sketching subjects without their knowledge and surprising them with a drawing of them as a result.

There's a real trick to doing it. You have to be far enough away so that the subject can't see you and draw fast enough so that they don't walk away in the middle of the picture and you can't find them. Facial likeness becomes secondary to body pose, posture and gesture.

I try coming up with stories for mine, give them a bit of a narrative:

November 11, is also the final day to attend the Puppet, Muppet and Marionette Art Show at the Avalon Gallery in Orlando. It's your last chance to see my three pieces up close and personal!

Finally, the new movie, The Muppets will be opening in just a few weeks on Thanksgiving Day. There's been a huge media campaign fir the film, including television show appearances, magazine articles, audio interviews and new merchandise. It's a great time to be a Muppets fan!.

Orlando Puppet Festival: Muppet Movie Screening

Last night the family and I attended the Sing-Along Screening of The Muppet Movie. The free show was hosted by Ibex Puppetry and was part of the Orlando Puppet festival. It took place at the Avalon Gallery where the Puppet, Muppet and Marionette Art Show is being held.

The layout of the gallery has been modified a bit since my last visit. Pictured is a view of the gallery from across the street. Two of my pieces have been moved to the front of the gallery facing the window. You can see them on the far left.

This makes my pieces highly visible to anyone passing by the gallery. What an honor!

The sing-along screening of The Muppet Movie became so popular, that after a tally of the RSVPs for the 7:30 show, a second show needed to be added at 10. The show was free, however it was highly recommended to purchase a 3 dollar "goodie bag" before the show.

The bag included various props, noisemakers and other fun objects that we were supposed to utilize during specific points in the movie. I won't ruin the surprise by revealing the contents of the bag and when and where in the film they're meant to be used. This show can't be explained, it has to be EXPERIENCED!

The highlight of the evening for me was getting to meet the effervescent Heather Henson. Heather is the founder of Ibex Puppetry, an entertainment company dedicated to promoting the fine art of puppetry and produces the annual Orlando Puppet Festival.

We're both proud and amazed to say that in the 20 months of his life, Jett has never been sick.

That's not to say he hasn't come close. He has a significant amount of dietary restrictions, for example, his food is strictly gluten-free. He can handle raw dairy in small amounts. Recently we tried introducing organic pasteurized milk and cheese into his diet and the result was a mucusy Niagra Falls flowing constantly from Jett's nose.

After a few days it cleared up, but it wasn't a fun ride.

There are only a few hours left to contribute to Dark Mischief's Kickstarter campaign!

Dark Mischief will be released soon and it's a collection of short, spooky comic stories. "Dead Charlie and Zombie Bob", an original tale that I wrote and illustrated, is one of the stories featured in the book.

The Kickstarter campaign has been put into place in an effort to raise some funds to pay advances to the artists and writers who have contributed to this project. 100% of all proceeds from this campaign (after paying for the rewards themselves) go directly to the creators who contributed stories as advances on their royalties.

Changing Minds Foundation Seminar

Milwaukee Mitchell Airport Monday

Since I am traveling back to Florida today, let's pretend that yesterday's post was for Muppet Monday. There, that was easy, wasn't it?

I came up to Wisconsin for a few days to visit with family and attend my cousin's wedding. Now I'm sitting in my favorite airport, Milwaukee's General Mitchell Airport, waiting to board my flight. Why is it my favorite?

There are ample Cheeseheads available in the gift shops,

there's ping pong,

there are pterodactyls

...and there is a very specific area set up after the security checkpoint in case you become "discombobulated"

I'm going to miss ol' Wisconsin, but I'm sure I'll be back soon.

Between the production of Avenue Q at Theatre Downtown (extended through October 29) and the upcoming Thanksgiving release of the new Muppet movie, I’ve had puppets on the brain lately. Which led me to wonder “what’s going on with the Orlando Puppet Festival this year?”The answer, it turns out, is quite a bit. The 7th annual event, created and supported by Heather Henson of IBEX Puppetry, returns this November in a new format. This year, the programming is being spearheaded by Sean Keohane of Pinocchio’s Marionette Theater in the Altamonte Mall, which will host the bulk of OPF’s performances on November 5 & 6. In addition, there will be more adult-oriented offerings, including a “puppet slam” and Muppet Movie singalong, held downtown at Urban Rethink and the Gallery at Avalon Island.As a festival kickoff/preview, the OPF-sponsored art show “Puppet, Muppet, & Marionette” premiered last night at the Gallery at Avalon Island, as part of the evening’s Third Thursday art crawl. The collection curated by Benjamin S. Sawinski features inagesof Jim Henson’s iconic characters reinterpreted by over a dozen artists including Rhandi, Kenny Durkin, Eric Johnson, Parker Sketch, Cassie Wojcik, and Jennifer Jacobson. My favorite element of the exhibit is the display of handmade creatures by Jack Fields in the adjoining Cafe; the richly textured junk-made monsters (along with stills from his work-in-progress surrealist short film) are each unique, but all carry a consistently off-kilter aesthetic that serves to imbue piles of detritus with personality.

Just got back from the opening night of the Puppet Muppet and Marionette Art Festival at the Avalon Gallery in Orlando. There was a HUGE turnout and I met a lot of enthusiastic and supportive gallery attendees. I'll be going back to take more pictures, but here are a few for now.This is the view from outside the gallery. I'll get a better shot next time, but I was so excited to get inside the gallery and look around. Here's the famous poster for the show. I'm still knee-deep in production on my short story Dead Charlie and Zombie Bob, but I thought I'd take a little break and show you a bit of artwork from it.This is a movie poster that appears at some point in the story. It's supposed to be a parody of the animated movie posters from the past few years. Muppet Monday: one man's trash is another man's Muppet

I'm only a few days away from the deadline to submit my pieces for the Muppet, Puppet and Marionette Art Festival. I've completed two already. The third is almost finished.

I actually teased it the other day. This box of junk is going to be repurposed as art featuring several of the Muppet characters. The idea was to portray the characters while not necessarily hiding the object. I wanted the viewer to be able to clearly see what the Muppet was made from.
I turned the football into Kermit. I cut the football in half and painted it green. I used craft foam for the collar.

I ripped some eyes off of an old plush Kermit and stuck them to the face.

Here's the end result. There are four other Muppets joining Kermit on the final piece, which I will be posting here tomorrow!
